Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure to treat severe aortic valve stenosis, in which a new valve prosthesis is placed using a catheter, usually inserted through an artery in the groin. This procedure is particularly suitable for patients who, due to their age or other medical risks, are not candidates for open-heart surgery, and it allows for rapid recovery and significant improvements in heart function and quality of life.

TAVI stands for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, a procedure in which a new heart valve is inserted via a catheter to replace a narrowed aortic valve (aortic stenosis). It is mainly recommended for elderly patients or those who are not suitable for open-heart surgery due to their health condition.
In the TAVI procedure, the cardiologist guides a catheter, usually through the femoral artery in the groin, to the heart. A folded artificial valve is guided through this catheter to the site of the old, narrowed aortic valve, unfolded, and placed there to restore normal blood flow direction and volume.
TAVI is less invasive than traditional open-heart valve surgery, leading to faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and less pain after the procedure. It is also a safe alternative for patients who would be at higher risk for open surgery due to other medical conditions.
Although TAVI is considered safe, it carries risks such as bleeding, vascular complications, stroke, kidney problems, and rare cases of heart rhythm disturbances or valve leaks. The risk of infection and the need for lifelong blood thinners may also exist, depending on the patient’s specific situation.
After a TAVI operation, patients will usually stay in the hospital for a few days for monitoring. Most patients experience a noticeable improvement in their symptoms and can return to normal activities once they have fully recovered. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the function of the new valve and to ensure that no long-term complications occur.
